Reviewed by Donald Mertz No, this is not a travel guide or a directory of veggie-friendly restaurants. It is essentially a phrase book. It lists words and phrases of importance to vegetarians and vegans - such as 'Does this contain fish?' or 'I don't eat red meat' - in no fewer than 110 languages. The book also includes information about what sort of dishes a vegetarian traveler can expect to encounter in different countries. To be honest, I'm not sure how useful this book would be. Nowadays, most standard phrase books include the terms that a vegetarian would typically need, although I can see why some travelers would prefer to have all the phrases in a single volume. It is also a pity that, for non-roman languages like Japanese and Thai, only the phonetic representations of the phrases are given. I would find it easier to point to the phrase in the native language rather than trying to pronounce it. However, the idea behind the book is a sound one. For someone who frequently travels to non-English speaking countries, it might well prove valuable.
