Reviewed by Janey Macleod I can highly recommend this book to any vegetarian or vegan woman who is pregnant or has recently given birth. It provides an extremely useful guide to what you must and must not eat to ensure the health of both yourself and your child. The book is written in a friendly, conversational style, and is very easy to understand. Ms. Grant describes each of the important dietary elements, such as carbohydrates, protein, minerals and vitamins. In each case, she tells you why it is important, how much of it you need and which foods you can expect to find it in. The advice is always simple and practical, and refreshingly free from medical jargon. The book is not written specifically for vegetarians, but the writer does pay particular attention to the needs of non-meat eaters. She does a good job of listing plant-based sources of protein, calcium and other essential nutrients that veggies need to pay particular attention to. There is also a selection of recipes designed specifically for pregnant women. Many of these recipes are vegetarian, and while they wouldn't justify the cost of the book on their own, they do provide a worthwhile bonus. (I especially enjoyed the spicy couscous with roasted vegetables.)
