Reviewed by Janey Macleod This book is very much for the gourmet vegetarian - the sort of person who wants to produce impressive meals, and is prepared to spend plenty of time in the kitchen (not to mention shopping for ingredients) in order to so. Personally, I found most of the dishes too elaborate. They will certainly impress your dinner guests, but they are not the sort of thing you would want to make in a hurry when you get home from work. I am also unimpressed with the book's claim of catering for 'today's modern style of lighter, healthier eating'. I'm OK with healthy, but light is not a word my hungry family wants to hear at dinner time. Ms Abensur is the sort of cook who prefers goats cheese to cheddar, and who won't use plain honest tomatoes when she can use the sun-blushed variety. And the book itself is just as fussy as the dishes, with too many arty photographs that add nothing to the recipes. Still, I have to admit that the quality of the dishes on offer is excellent. The ones I have tried so far have turned out extremely well. Perhaps the best bet would be to give this book to friends or relations in the hope that they will have the energy to try out the dishes - and to invite you to dinner to sample the results.
